Job Description and Duties

Under the supervision of the Supervising Workers’ Compensation Consultant (SWCC), the Office Assistant (Typing) will learn and perform a wide range of clerical duties for the Division of Workers’ Compensation Medical Unit, Qualified Medical Evaluator (QME) program. In accordance with applicable laws and regulations, the OA (T) will be responsible for timely processing of incoming and outgoing mail and other correspondence, maintaining the QME filing system, delivering high-level customer service through internal and external communication, and providing other support services to the program, as assigned.

Effective July 1, 2025, specific Bargaining Units and associated Excluded State employees are subject to a salary reduction between 2% - 4.62% in exchange for hours in the Personal Leave Program 2025 (PLP 2025) per month. Working Conditions

The position is located at:

1515 Clay St.
Oakland, CA 94612

The OA(T) works in a smoke-free DWC Office under LED lighting, controlled temperature, quiet to moderate noise levels; equipped with cubicles computer, and other office equipment.  Ability to retrieve and transport legacy box files in a safe manner. 

The position requires the ability for prolonged sitting and to work at a computer for extended periods of time and to move and transport office items in a safe manner.

Special Requirements

  • The position(s) require(s) the ability to type at a minimum speed as designated on the Class Specifications (link available in the additional documentation section). You must obtain a valid typing certificate confirming your ability to meet the minimum typing speed, prior to being hired.   • Excellent skills to evaluate complex documents, extracting detailed information and processing documents

  • Excellent communication skills, verbal and written, to ensure quality customer service and to communicate with other staff and those contacted in the work place.
  • Excellent organizational skills to prioritize work assignments or projects.
  • Excellent general office skills working in a team environment
  • Proficient computer skills (Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook).

  • Ability to: perform difficult clerical work, including ability to spell correctly; use good English; make arithmetical computations; operate various office machines; follow oral and written directions; evaluate situations accurately and take effective action; read and write English at a level required for successful job performance; make clear and comprehensive reports and keep difficult records; meet and deal tactfully with the public; apply specific laws, rules and office policies and procedures; prepare correspondence independently utilizing a wide knowledge of vocabulary, grammar and spelling; communicate effectively; provide functional guidance.
