Law Clerk Position

The Clark County District Attorney's Office is seeking qualified candidates for the Law Clerk position. This recruitment will be used to fill vacancies located in our Civil, Juvenile, and/or Criminal Divisions. Law Clerks provide support to our staff of attorneys by performing legal research and writing on legal issues. Law Clerks interpret and apply laws, court decisions, and other legal authorities in the preparation of briefs, pleadings, legal opinions, and other legal documents. Law Clerks who are barred in Nevada may be allowed to make court appearances on behalf of the County.

This is an open and continuous recruitment. Students in or entering their final year of ABA accredited law school are encouraged to apply; employment is contingent upon receiving your Juris Doctor degree by the time of appointment. This examination will establish an Open Competitive Eligibility list to fill current and/or future vacancies that may occur within the next six (6) months or may be extended as needed by Human Resources. Human Resources reserves the right to call only the most qualified applicants to the selection process. Some positions may be used to fill term Limited-Permanent positions. The selected candidates will be hired for a special project or duties of a limited duration and be required to sign a term of employment letter specifying condition(s) and exact dates of employment. The successful selected candidates will be eligible for benefits during the duration of employment. This position is confidential and excluded from membership in the union. Employment is contingent upon the results of a background investigation, which may include both a pre-and post-offer background check for positions within the District Attorney's Office, and a test for controlled substances. Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States. Please note, Clark County does not provide H1B visa sponsorships or transfers for any employment positions. Employment is contingent upon the results of a pre-employment drug examination.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Graduation from an accredited law school with a Juris Doctor (professional doctorate) degree.
  • Full-time experience in performing legal research and/or writing legal opinions or documents is desirable.
  • All qualifying education and each experience must be clearly documented in the "Education" and "Work Experience" sections of the application.

Examples of duties:

  • Researches applicable legal and factual issues using computerized techniques and/or law library materials at the direction of an attorney or judge.
  • Interprets and applies laws, court decisions, and other legal authorities in the preparation of briefs, pleadings, and other legal papers.
  • Drafts memoranda, opinions, and other documents related to findings on specific cases or issues.
  • Researches and explains departmental, County, and State procedures to attorneys and departmental support staff.
  • Contributes to the efficiency and effectiveness of the unit's service to its customers by offering suggestions and directing or participating as an active member of a work team.
  • Maintains accurate records and files; prepares a variety of records and reports as assigned.
  • Uses standard office equipment, including a computer in the performance of the work.
  • May drive a personal or County vehicle in the course of the work.

Mobility to work in a typical office setting and use standard office equipment, vision to read printed materials and a computer screen, and hearing and speech to communicate in person or over the telephone.
